Born December 16, 1775 in Hampshire, England, Jane Austen was the seventh child of Cassandra and George Austen. George Austen was a rector at an Anglican parish. All the Austen children were encouraged to think creatively and read extensively. In the 1790s, Austen wrote her first novel Love and Friendship, parody of "romantic fiction" in the form of love letters. This work, along with a 34 page novel called The History of England are referred to as Austen's Juvenilia. Jane began anonymously publishing her works in her 30s between 1811 and 1816. Her "darling child" was Pride and Prejudice, which recieved critical acclaim and continues to be a favorite for readers today.
